Sitcoske Gallery is proud to present the first solo exhibition of
John Kalymnios on the West Coast. The sculptures of John Kalymnios
deal with the ways in which we perceive and interact with the world
around us. They do this by drawing our attention to the layers and
filters through which we experience subjective reality.
Kalymnios has produced sculptures that portray the natural world
through moving images, motors, and light. Although they have the
look of sleek, industrially produced objects, these works are unique
and handmade. Instead of offering us static images, they recreate
the experience of nature itself, effectively reproducing the essence
of water and sky. In WATER PROJECTION, three back-lit duraclear
photographs of waves float past each other as they are captured
on a video camera and projected, jewel-like, onto the gallery wall.
It is this melding of technical precision and ephemeral, evocative
beauty that makes Kalymnios work so compelling.
In other works, Kalymnios focuses more intently on the interactions
between viewer and object. A sculpture made of ten fresnel lenses
distorts whatever the viewer sees through it, thus making the focus
of the work the viewers distorted perception of the world.
He has also created a drawing machine that will produce a new drawing
on the gallery wall every few days. These drawings are a collaborative
effort between human and machine, the operator of the machine having
some control over their final appearance.
