AQUA ROSE, 2002
mixed media on linen, 60 x 60"

Marcel Sitcoske Gallery is proud to present our third solo show of new work by Bay Area abstract painter Linda Geary. With her current body of work, Geary continues to push the boundaries of contemporary abstract painting as she further refines her own unique style.

This exhibition marks a departure from Geary’s previous work in a number of ways. In these paintings, distinct and well-defined areas of color contrast greatly with the white ground of the canvas. Whereas in her previous work, the canvas was obscured by the thickly layered paint, in these works splashes of thick resin, acrylic and watercolor washes dance around the edges, leaving as much as half the canvas devoid of color.

She has also limited her materials to acrylic, watercolor, absorbent ground washes and resin mixed with pigment that she pours or splashes over the surface. Gone is the thick impasto and clouded waxy layers of her previous work. Slick, sleek areas of brightly colored resin set this work apart. In Crimson Pearl (60 x 54 inches) a jet of glossy red shoots from the upper left to the lower right corners, framed by a blue-gray v-shape, a brown arc and a light green ring. A thin reddish-brown wash and opaque white resin pools serve to unify the composition. The action in Gingko (54 x 60 inches) is based in the upper left and center of the painting where ribbons of pure orange, light green, deep brown and white twist and contort themselves in an exciting interplay over emerald, brown and orange washes. Here, as in many of these works, Geary uses similar colors of resin and watercolor wash to heighten the contrast between textures.

GUSH SPIRAL, 2002
mixed media on linen, 60 x 60"

In keeping with her last body of work, Geary has titled many of her paintings, such as Sexy Rexy (88 x 63 inches), after cosmetics and the colors she uses reflect this emphasis on the commercially manufactured and industrial as well. This exhibition focuses more prominently on the monumental nature of her paintings. With this latest body of work, we are able to see the further evolution of Linda Geary’s painting, and the exciting places to which they can take us.

Linda Geary will also be included in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts' survey of outstanding local artists, Bay Area Now 3, which opens on October 26. This body of work will include small and medium sized paintings.
